What to do in Deep Cove

Hike to Quarry Rock

The Quarry Rock trail is a great way to explore the forests and views of BC, without venturing too far from Vancouver.  Due to the fact that the trail is relatively easy, and very accessible, it’s often incredibly busy. I would definitely recommend starting early to avoid the crowds. Regardless of the crowds, however, it’s still a great hike in almost any weather, with the views at the rock changing from sunny and spectacular to moody and atmospheric when it rains.

The trail is approximately 4km long and takes up to 2 hours to complete. Read more about Quarry Rock at Deep Cove with this full trail description.

Deep Cove Kayak Rental

Deep Cove Kayak rentals have high-quality kayaks and SUPs to rent. They are often busy, so do call and book in advance. Single and tandem kayaks are available, and are the usual tourist traps in terms of pricing, but hey – you get to paddle in this stunning location and get away from the crowds.

Kayaking at Deep Cove is easy enough for anyone to do without prior experience. You can leave your valuables locked up at the rental shop, or they’ll provide you with a dry bag if you want to take them with you. The kayak rental shop is located right next to the water, to the right of the main park.

For those looking for a bigger challenge, you can even rent a kayak overnight and paddle to one of the campgrounds at Twin Islands.

Paddle to Twin Islands

If you’d like to take you’re paddling a little further, there are a number of paddling routes you can take on, including some that involve overnight camping. The most popular of these is the paddle across to Twin Islands. You can see these islands across the water from Deep Cove, and they make a great first overnight kayak adventure.

Check out the full adventure description for Twin Islands here.

There is also a much longer route you can complete to paddle down the length of the Indian Arm. This route also allows you to visit Granite Falls. Look out for an adventure description for this adventure soon!

Picnics in the Park

Deep Cove is busy for a reason. It’s a picturesque location with parks aplenty lining the waterfront. Bring a barbeque, or a simple picnic for an afternoon and relax at the water’s edge.

You have two main options for a picnic location if you’re looking for a waterside view. Panorama park is directly in front of the main parking lot, has a slightly higher vantage point, but less shade. There are good barbeque spots and a sheltered area if hosting a group, though you’ll need to get there early to get your spot. Down and to the right hand side of the water, you’ll find a small, more shaded park.

During the summer months, Panorama Park hosts a number of outdoor concerts. I’m still trying to find a reliable source that lists the dates and acts.

With such a spectacular location, Deep Cove makes a lovely swimming location. That said, I would try to keep away from the marina

Where To Eat in Deep Cove

The village community is small but welcomes many tourists year-round. The main street as you enter the town has a small selection of cafes, fast food outlets, and a couple of restaurants. Expect queues in busy periods and consider taking a picnic instead of waiting.

  • Honey’s Doughnuts are particularly popular for their tasty snacks. They’re located near to the main 4-way stop sign in the center of town.
  • Cafe Orso is a well-rated coffee shop if you don’t want the crowds of the other coffee shops.
  • Deep Cove Osaka Sushi is a well-rated Sushi place, though I haven’t had the chance to visit it yet. Generally, sushi around Vancouver is very good.
  • Arms Reach Bistro is a well-rated restaurant closer to the water.

For the restaurant options above, I would recommend booking a table in advance to avoid dissapointment.

Deep Cove to Mount Seymour Trail (More Challenging Than Quarry Rock)

If you’re looking for a more challenging trail, I recommend this hike up to Mount Seymour Ski Resort and potentially one of the peaks beyond (Dinkey Peak in this case). Far quieter than the Quarry Rock hike, you’ll get into the thick of the BC forests, take on a more challenging trail, and walk up to the ski resort up top!

From the ski resort itself there aren’t too many views, though if you continue on to Dinkey Peak or Dog Mountain, you’ll find spectacular views of the city.

Note: Generally this is an out-and-back hike, though it is possible to get the bus back down from the top, or in our case we hitchhiked back to the bottom.

Frequently Asked Questions

Deep Cove can be visited all year round. The views are great no matter the time of year, and to be honest, even when it’s rainy, it’s still a pleasant walk.

For kayaking and on water activites, summer (Jun-Sep) will be your best bet, but otherwise you’re good to go at any time.

Deep Cove is approximately 30 minutes from Vancouver. Deep Cove only has VERY limited parking, so you may want to think about taking the bus, especially during busy summer weekends.

Check out the Translink website to see the bus routes.

Deep Cove is a residential area, so whilst you may find the odd AirBnb, it’s not really a place that people stay overnight.

Deep Cove is tiny, so once you’re in the village center by the park, the water, and the trailhead to Quarry Rock, you won’t need to get around much.

Bring your walking shoes, and perhaps a picnic to enjoy in the park. If you’re thinking of renting a kayak or stand up paddle board, bring some clothes you’re willing to get wet – and book ahead!

Whilst we are in BC and therefore in bear country, you’re unlikely to see any bears. They tend to stay away from crowds of tourists and so keep away from the noise. However, you may come across seals playing in the water, or eagles perched in the trees above. There are also many colorful starfish and other sea creatures that can be fun for kids to explore.
