The trail to Elfin Lakes is located within Garibaldi Provincial Park and is known for its spectacular alpine scenery. It's a well-loved hike that takes you through varied landscapes, including lush meadows and old-growth forests, before opening up to the subalpine terrain that leads to the lakes. The path is well-maintained, with clear markers guiding the way. You'll be treated to views of impressive peaks across the valleys and, if timed right, fields of wildflowers. Elfin Lakes themselves are a beautiful pair of lakes set in a broad, scenic basin. One lake is desginated for drinking and the other for swimming.
The trail to Elfin Lakes covers a distance of approximately 21km round trip, with an elevation gain of about 600m. It’s a steady uphill climb, but the gradient is generally moderate. The trail is mostly wide and smooth, with some rocky patches. Due to the length and elevation gain, it’s important to start early and be prepared for a full day hike. Weather at higher elevations can change rapidly, so it’s crucial to pack layered clothing, plenty of water, and food. The trail is also popular for overnight treks, with bookable shelter and tent platforms available near the lakes. For those looking for a day hike or a multi-day adventure with stunning mountain views, Elfin Lakes is definitely a memorable experience. If you're looking to extend your trip, check out the Details Tab up top where you'll find info on the Gargoyles, Opal Cone and Rampart Ponds Campground, further still into the Garibaldi backcountry.
The trailhead is located about 20 minutes from Squamish. Parking is free at the Elfin Lakes Trailhead. You’ll travel a short distance down a gravel road which is passable with any vehicle. Although Rampart Ponds isn’t really a winter destination, if you happen to be going to the Elfin Lakes Trailhead in winter, you may be required to put on snow chains. This is often enforced. This trailhead is a notorious trap for unprepared motorists without snow chains. Don't be one of the road-blockers!
