The trail up Elk Mountain takes you up through some classic BC forests, takes in a couple of viewpoints and steeper rough sections, before meandering up to magnificient alpine meadow with views out over the valley below.
The Elk Mountain trail can be thought of in two parts. The first 60% of the trail meanders up through a coastal forest along a wide but rough trail - stones and roots litter the trail. Beyond this, the final 40% of the trail becomes steeper and pontially more slippery depending on conditions and footwear. At 8.5km with 800m of elevation, you can think of Elk Mountain as a relatively short all day hike, with plenty of time left after for a beer Chilliwack.
The Elk Mountain trailhead is located just over 15km from Chilliwack. From Highway 1, take the easy-to-remember Junction 123 and head southbound along Prest Road. After about 4km you'll reach a roundabout where you'll follow Bailey Road (EAST). Less than a kilometer later, you'll take the right fork up Elk View Road. From here you have a further 11km up windy hillside roads. Following Elk View Road all-the-way to the obvious car park on the left-hand side. The road does continue beyond the trailhead, so keep a look-out. The trailhead is marked as the Elk-Thurston Trail within a sign at the far end of the car park. The trail begins immediately to the right.
