Take a boat from Tofino to the western side of Meares Island. From there you’ll find a 5 hour round trip to the top of the Lone Cone. Be prepared for a mind-blowing view!
Keep reading for bonus tips on how to capture a very unusual view from the top.
The trail to Lone Cone takes approximately 5 hours, including breaks and reasonable lunch stop. From the water taxi drop off, the trail remains flat for a short while as you meander through dense and muddy terrain. The trail is well marked and becomes steep and unforgiving for the remainder of the distance.
The Lone Cone Mountain Hostel has pre-erected tents, hostel beds, hot tub and volleyball court. They also have a host of different water activities such as kayaks and SUPs. A great place to get away from the crowds of Tofino.
Lone Cone is located on Meares Island. There are several companies in Tofino that provide water taxis with little notice. Bear in mind that in peak summer season, however, there may be many other trying to access these services.
Meares Island Camping – Water Taxi
Your best option in my opinion, is to combine the hike with a night or two of camping at the Lone Cone Mountain Hostel. A water taxi to and from the campground is included with your stay; easily the best option.
