Mistaya Canyon is a commonly missed checkpoint on the Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper. In my opinion, this is a big mistake; not least because the lesser crowds make it a perfect photo opportunity. The Mistaya River originates at Peyto Lake a little further south, before dropping down into this spectacular raging canyon.
We didn't have much time so we did the whole Icefields Parkway in a day, but really wish we’d spent two or three days exploring the area a little more. These canyons, waterfalls and viewpoints all have their hidden secrets and make a perfect opportunity to stretch your legs on a long drive. Mistaya Canyon and Athabasca Falls are in my experience the two most commonly missed stops on the Icefields Parkway. Don’t make the same mistake!
You will probably notice that both the parking lot and trailhead are very understated, which may leave you wondering whether to stop at all. STOP. This place is magnificent.
Navigation
The trail: Well-signed, marked or frequent on trail maps. Always carry a map. Phone signal in BC is not reliable when hiking. Always carry an OFFLINE map. I recommend and use AllTrails+ and Gaia Maps.
The canyon itself is located approximately 1km walk from the main highway, just south of the Saskatchewan River Crossing. The trail is well marked and follows a wide gravel road almost all the way to the canyon but the gravel makes it inaccessible for a regular wheelchair. For walkers, the trail is relatively easy, but requires good footwear. The trail reaches the edge of fast-flowing water and although some areas are fenced, keep a close eye on children, and better still – hold their hands at all times. The water is cold and fierce, even at the end of the dry season.
Once you reach Mistaya Canyon and the river that flows into it, there are numerous spots to put down your things and watch the water go by. I could sit here for hours, just contemplating life.
The falls are located 158km south of Jasper, making it roughly halfway along the Icefields Parkway. Use these kilometer markers to help plan the order of your trip.
Although there are no public transport options, some tours operate in the area including Moose Travel Network.
Mistaya Canyon is 130km from Banff and 158km from Jasper.
