As with many of the hikes in the Pacific Rim park, the hike down through the forest to Schooner Cove feels like a walk back in time to Jurrasic Park. Lush rainforests swirl around you with moss and tree giants that make you feel so insignificant. The trail conditions down through a well maintained forest path, on boardwalks and crossing a number of small creeks. Eventually you'll hear the ocean and pop out onto Schooner Cove, with Long Beach to your left. No matter what time of year, or whatever the weather, this is one of my favorite hikes.
When the feature photo was taken in February 2018, it had rained all day, offering us little hope of sunlight. Just as the sun began to set, the clouds started to part, creating this magical scene which remains one of my favorite photos.
The hike is not suitable for wheelchairs. The trail was updated in 2023 and follows an uneven path down through the forests, with many stairs and boardwalks. That said the overall length and elevation gain of the hike should make it a great option for hikes with your parents, or anyone wanting a less strenuous walk.
To reach Tofino and its surrounding beaches, you'll need to catch the BC Ferries Ferry to Vancouver Island. From there you can catch a bus or drive to Tofino. There is a local bus in Tofino that can help you reach some of the local walks.
You will need to pay a small fee for parking to help support the National Park.
