The Deer Group Islands are often touted as a quieter alternative to the Broken Group Islands. At just over 15km from one end to the other, the distances aren't huge, which makes the Deer Group the perfect destination for chill days with just a few hours of exploratory paddling each day.
From single-day paddles to 3 or 4 day multi-day trips, the Deer Group Islands offer a stunning paddling location with easy access from Bamfield. Reaching the Deer Group Islands requires a committing 2km crossing across the Trevor Channel. After this, explore the shorelines of the Deer Group, with the more sheltered paddling to the north.
Along the mainland, you may see bears or deer, whilst out on the islands you'll find plenty of bird life, seals, and if you're lucky the odd whale. As we paddled along the western edge of Tzartus Island, we were lucky enough to see a pod of Orca hunting something, though luckily we weren't close enough to see what it was!

Phone signal in BC is not reliable. Always carry an offline map. I recommend and use AllTrails+ for hiking or GaiaMaps for general adventuring. Google Maps does not always have reliable route mapping for backcountry adventures.
Paddling Conditions - Deer Group Islands
Conditions & Ability
Paddler Ability
For intermediate paddlers, stay generally north of Bamfield after you exit the bay. Conditions towards the ocean can change rapidly, with big swell and wind generating more difficult paddling conditions.
I've divided the map into three areas
In green - the more sheltered paddling area generally offers some protection from the wind or some buffer distance from the larger ocean swell.
In orange - the less sheltered areas have more exposure to wind, which may create more difficult paddling conditions with waves and chop.
In red - the most exposed area to wind and ocean swell. These areas present often challenging conditions with big rolling ocean swell and more difficult rescue conditions.
These descriptions are based on the fact that the prevailing wind tends to blow in from the southwest (from the ocean). Your wind forecast may be different, so be sure to check wind direction as part of your planning.
Tides & Currents
Located at the edge of the Pacific Ocean, the Deer Group Islands are tidal but don't experience any significant currents. As is common on these paddling trips, the wind should be your main concern.
Wind & Waves
The wind tends to blow from the WestSouthWest, blowing up the two outer channels and across the islands. The eastern side of the islands will often be a little more sheltered than the west though this will depend on your specific wind forecast. Around the outer islands closest to the ocean, you'll venture into serious ocean territory. Do not paddle around Edward King Island or Diana Island unless you are prepared for bigger swell, wind and have the necessary experience to look after yourself and your group.

Camping
Camping on the Deer Group Islands
The campsites of the Deer Group Islands are operated on a first come first served basis. Unlike the Broken Group Islands, they are not run by Parks Canada, and therefore do not need require a Parks Canada Pass or an overnight camping reservation.
Stick to the campsites in your area of ability. Do not attempt to venture into more difficult water to access a camp "just around the corner". Conditions can change quickly and may prevent you from getting back from that camp.
The camps of the outer islands or more exposed paddling areas should only be used if you have significant kayaking experience.
Getting to the launch point at Bamfield is not as challenging as it might seem. Whilst Bamfield can only be reached by Forest Service Road, the Service Road from Port Alberni is well maintained.
Evo is a car share program which operates in both Vancouver and Victoria. They help reduce car ownership and encourage car sharing. Whether you live in BC or are visiting from abroad, Evo is a great way to get around with minimal fuss. Their cars are even equipped with bike and ski racks if you’re heading to the mountains!
