The ocean has carved this sandstone peninsula into an unusual wavelike formation that we now call the Malaspina Galleries. This impressive carving has the form of a barreling wave and is truly fascinating to see. It is a wonderfully visual way to appreciate the sheer power of water.
Wavelike formations exist all over the Gulf Islands, but these are the most well-known. These are by many accounts the most impressive at 100m long, ideal because they are also the most accessible. The wave is nearly 4m tall, which means you can easily walk under it and observe the finer details of the rock structure.
Facilities
There are no facilities at Malaspina Galleries. It is simply a rock formation along the coast.

Getting There
The Malaspina Galleries are located at the northwestern tip of Gabriola Island, about 3km from the ferry terminal. This will take about 40 minutes on foot and just 10 on a bike.
Gabriola Island can be reached using the regular BC ferry service that operates roughly once every hour. The ferry takes cars, bikes, and passengers. The terminal for this service is located in the center of Nanaimo, to the right of the marina.
You can rent bikes from Gabriola CyQle, which is about 1.5km from the ferry terminal. This is an inexpensive way to travel around the island, which can easily be done in a day. The appropriately named North Road and South Road connect up most of the island.
If appropriate to reach this adventure, rent a car, or better still, reduce the demand for cars with Evo Car Share, Vancouver's car sharing network.
Evo is a car share program which operates in both Vancouver and Victoria. They help reduce car ownership and encourage car sharing. Whether you live in BC or are visiting from abroad, Evo is a great way to get around with minimal fuss. Their cars are even equipped with bike and ski racks if you’re heading to the mountains!
