Moraine Lake is often missed by busy tourists, in favor of Lake Louise just down the road. Don’t be one of those – Moraine Lake is way better! The richness of colors visible from the closest viewpoints are far better at Lake Moraine.
In addition, it’s much easier to get a higher vantage point looking down over the lake, which means the stunning blue colors are even brighter. This just might be the most beautiful lake you’ll ever see.
Moraine Lake can be visited at any time of year, though bear in mind these two factors when planning your visit:
The lake gets incredibly busy at peak times. If you’re thinking of visiting after 7.30am in peak season; expect traffic and queues.
In winter the lake is frozen and covered with ice and snow, which means the lake isn’t aquamarine blue as you might be expecting!
Facilities
Toilets
At the lakeside sits the Moraine Lake Lodge, with a restaurant and accommodation. The indoor washrooms are reserved for those paying for these upmarket facilities. There are additional toilet facilities for public use next to the car park.
Canoe Rental
Canoes are available for rent at the lakeside at the usual extortionate tourist prices. But hey, when in Rome. After all, what could be more Canadian than canoeing across this spectacular lake?

Moraine Lake and Lake Louise are in my eyes the first major stop on the Icefields Parkway; when driving from Banff. The Icefields Parkway officially begins 10km further north, but I consider these iconic lakes to be part of this world-famous road trip.
Although Moraine Lake is well sign-posted from highway 1, note that you can't actually drive to to the lake. You'll need to park at Lake Louise Lakeshore and take a shuttle. Find out more here.
