A GUIDE TO TOFINO

JEWEL OF THE PACIFIC COAST - PACIFIC RIM NATIONAL PARK

The towns of Tofino and Ucluelet sit at opposite ends of a small peninsula which encapsulates the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The coastline offers unimaginable landscapes; endless beaches, archipelagos, old-growth forests and hot springs for good measure.

Whether you’re looking to take a relaxing stroll along a beach or take on a more adventurous activity, there is something magical in Tofino and Ucluelet for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tofino is generally considered a summer destination.

Summer (June-Sep)
For 4 months a year, Tofino comes alive as Canada’s only real surf town. With miles and miles of sandy beaches and rainforest walks to explore, Tofino won’t disappoint. Sure, it may be busy, but it’s still worth it.

Not Summer (Everything Else)
For the rest of the year, Tofino is definitely less crowded. The weather is less predictable, and you’re more likely to experience the Pacific Coast with the raw, coastal weather that it’s known for. “Storm Watching” seems to be the new out-of-season thing, probably just good marketing – but in fairness, I’ll happily watch the waves roll in along these amazing beaches at any time of year.

Tofino is a 3-hour drive from the Nanaimo Ferry (Departure Bay), or 5 hours from the Victoria Ferry Terminal (Schwartz Bay)

Tofino is small. Realistically the furthest you’ll drive on a day trip is down to Ucluelet, which is about 45 minutes. There is a dedicated bike path that runs parallel to the main road for the entire distance, and also offers a great way to get between Tofino’s beaches.

Bring your hiking gear with you.

For surfing, there are many many options for surf rental.

For cycling, there are also a few shops that rent bicycles, but nothing fancy. This isn’t a big road biking or mountain biking destination.
